There is a lot of water on this course and in fact it comes into play on no fewer than 10 of the 18 holes. If the River Maigue wasn’t enough, there is a massive man-made lake that features strongly on the front nine as the course wanders through this magnificent estate.
The mature trees are a characteristic of this parkland course which has been very cleverly designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, Senior. Despite only opening in 1995, the course has already housed a number of important championships – including the Irish Open - and such is the quality of the design, it seems destined to feature more on the professional golfing calendar in the future.
The finishing hole is something of a classic and the 548-yard par five, has plenty of risk/reward for all levels of players. The river forces the player to opt for the right hand side of the fairway, giving a longer approach over water to the two-tiered green. The Manor house would alone be the backdrop to end all backdrops, but the hole also is graced by the Cedar of Lebanon -- the oldest in the British Isles at 395 years.
