Doonbeg is a Greg Norman course with an unparalleled setting on the Atlantic coast about 20 miles south of Shannon Airport.
Local environmental laws may well have prevented this course from being the best links on the West coast of Ireland and that is saying something when you consider the opposition; Waterville, Ballybunion, Lahinch - to name but three!
Unfortunately the course has had to be re-routed around several areas giving a sporadic impression of being "tricked up", but setting that aside, there really are some fantastic holes and scenery to match!
With an unusual configuration - 5 par 3's and 5 par 5's – the course winds its way through large sand dunes right on the edge of this wild coastline. The 1st hole is as good as any we have played and you finish with a flourish on the beautiful 18th. In between we really liked the 111 yard Par 3 14th which was amazingly difficult to hit considering we were only playing short irons.
The bunker in the middle of the 12th green didn't win too many votes, but somehow you have to play here to have a view. It is different, it is quirky and it is definitely worth a visit!
