This vastly underrated download course built on the chalk downs in leafy Surrey provides all year round golf and exceptional views across London. Its quality is clearly demonstrated by its regular inclusion as an Open qualifying course and it is a true test for golfers of all abilities.
Those that stand on the first tee and see a wide and inviting fairway are lulled into a false sense of security, because this course will catch you out. Unlike many of the Surrey courses there is no heather, but the rough is penal and the bunkers cleverly sited to catch anything slightly off line.
The sloping greens play a major part in good scoring at Effingham and if you do get the opportunity to play here, remember that all the greens slope towards the road (A246) – even when you don’t think they do.
It is not a hilly course and the views of London from the 15th tee are almost surprising. This tee also represents the start of 4 excellent finishing holes, culminating in a tricky dog leg right 18th leading back to the splendid Georgian club house.
Great place to play golf.
