There are two courses on the magnificent Goodwood estate and for our top 72 we have included the Downs course – the oldest of the two and considered one of the finest downland venues in the UK.
The course is a mix of woodland and open downland along the chalky South Downs and the changes in elevation provide some stunning views reaching as far as the Isle of Wight!
Goodwood Downs was upgraded in 2004 and by increasing the length to over 7000 yards and by adding some strategically placed bunkers, the course has counteracted the technological improvements and is now a true test for even the most accomplished golfer.
It doesn't take long to discover what this course is about, with an opening par 3 of over 200 yards. The 2nd hole is one of the feature holes – a short par 4 requiring a lay-up tee shot, followed by a mid-iron to a heavily bunkered green 80 feet below.
If there is a criticism, it is the long walks between holes, but if you are tired at the end of the round there is no better place to relax than the magnificent 18th century clubhouse.
