Tom Weiskopf created this absolute gem on the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, which he considers his "lasting memorial to golf". Framed by towering hills and bounded by the loch, the course winds through an abundance of trees and wild life without seemingly disturbing a blade of grass. Lush fairways, large beautifully manicured greens and the restored Rossdhu clubhouse epitomise the exclusivity. It starts gently enough and it is fascinating how each hole is different. When you reach the sixth, the longest hole in Scottish golf, you soon realise that this course is not just picturesque – it's a genuine test of golf. Like many of the holes, the 6th runs all along the side of the loch and you begin to understand why this place is so special. The 14th is a great risk and reward hole – a par 4 providing an option to go for the green with a carry of over 250 yards, or take the easier route with a fairway metal, followed by a wedge to an elevated green. Choose carefully which tees you play off, because the varied selection cleverly makes it more playable for the eminently less skilled off the forward tees, whilst providing a stiff examination for the lower handicaps off the back tees.
