This course is extremely flat – carved out of a forest and tucked away between West Byfleet and Woking. If flat sounds boring then it is not the case here. The bunkering has cleverly taken that into account and with each hole individually tree lined, there is a unique seclusion and feeling of personal ownership to each hole.

Now if you like old-fashioned and old-fashioned in golfing terms is invariably very very good, then this course takes you back in time. The clubhouse itself could be a listed building and member's names are written in chalk on the lockers. Its natural golf – not tricked up in any way and absolutely brimming with character.

Like many of the courses in this part of Surrey there is an abundance of heather but nothing too extreme. There are a handful of very good holes in the first eleven, but twelve through to eighteen is a special stretch and what make New Zealand stand out amongst its contemporaries.

Whenever we have played here, the course has been immaculate and whilst it isn't cheap, you do pay for the exclusivity and the feeling of being special for the day.
