Sometimes known as Deal, this natural links is a very tough place to play golf even without the wind. Indeed when the prevailing South Westerly does blow, it is as hard as it gets – particularly the back nine!
Awkward stances, tight lies and fast running fairways compliment the superb undulating greens which have pace and subtle borrows to test the warmest of putters. In our view this is not a course for high handicappers and even for those in the single figure category, you need to bring your "A" game with you.
It is best to hope that your first 11 holes have been really good because once you turn for home at the 12th the fun starts! There is nothing unfair about this course despite its toughness, but there is an abundance of large sand dunes which establishes the undulating character of the course and makes it unique.
It is seldom that a completely flat stance can be obtained other than on the tees and from the 12th you need to plot your way round the remaining 3000 yards against the wind.
There is no one great hole – they are all very, very good.
