There are a lot of clubs where two courses run side by side: East and West, Red and Blue, New and Old etc etc and it is often convenient to double up and play both on the same, or the following day.
We can think of some magical doubles: Sunningdale, The Berkshire and Ballybunion spring immediately to mind and Saunton definitely comes into the top category with its East and West links. For the Jenahura 72, we slightly preferred the East, but it could so easily have been the newer and slightly easier West.
Saunton East was built on an amazing expanse of sand dunes with the holes cleverly routed through the natural terrain. With 8 par 4's over 400 yards long it is a tough course and like all links courses, when the wind blows it can be brutal.
The first hole is an intimidating 470 yards with a long carry off the elevated tee and provides a good clue of what's in store. Feature hole for us however, was the long par 3 17th; over 200 yards and with the wind dead against, the driver was the only choice.
Stunning place!
