A vast number of people regard Sunningdale as the best place to pay golf in Britain. Certainly the Old Course is in most golfers’ top 3 in the UK and if you haven’t played it you would be forgiven for thinking that is a tough test in an amazing place. When the Pro’s play it however, they decimate the par, primarily because of the length or rather lack of it! It would be criminal to try and extend this course to combat the effects of modern technology, because it would undoubtedly lose its charm and aura. For the “normal” golfer it is the perfect venue: tough, unforgiving in places, but with a soft and exclusive feel to all the fairways. Despite its popularity and the constant trudge of golf shoes, the greens always seem to be immaculate here, an absolute credit to the ground staff. The elevated 10th tee is a wonderful example of what Sunningdale is all about. The panoramic views are only a sideshow to the excellence of the golf hole, which finishes on a sloping green in front of the half-way hut where you can pause to look back and enjoy this stunning location.
