While links land on the east coast of Ireland tends to be less spectacular than in the north or west, the European nonetheless is sited amongst high dunes, with a number of natural watercourses and the traditional riveted bunkers that are a feature of Pat Ruddy's designs. Several holes run alongside the magnificent beach at Brittas Bay and it has a unique option of two additional par 3 holes which give it a 20 hole layout.

The course is a little quirky, but it can lead to some exciting golf. There are dramatic views of the Irish Sea from most of the holes and the tall tumbling dunes present a challenge on every shot. The heart of the round at the European Club is the stretch from holes 7 through 13, which feature six substantial par 4's and one bone crunching par 5 of almost 600 yards.

On a very positive note, blind shots (deemed by many as an archaic feature of links golf) have largely been banished from the agenda at this Club, with 14 holes offering a complete view from tee to green and the remaining holes providing a clearly visible landing area.
