The famous West course and the 'not quite so famous' East course are hard acts to follow when you are talking about golf at Wentworth. Somehow they have managed to put together another 18 fabulous holes in an area rich with quality venues and despite the same terrain and environment, this 18 has a distinctly different feel about it.

Indeed it reminded us of Woburn with towering pine trees providing the natural definition for a layout that which exceeds 7000 yards. Because of its length, you do need to have the big furniture honed and accurate but there is room to stray a little off the tee, despite the inhibiting presence of the trees.

We found the par 5 dogleg 7th hole difficult to reach in 3 shots, such was the continuing bend before the green came into sight and perhaps because of its difficulty, we considered this to be the feature hole. Quite frankly it could have been any of the 18 holes, because this is a course that has taken old tradition and introduced modern thinking into its layout.

Its superb, expensive and uncompromising – but not necessarily in that order!
