The Wentworth West Course has had probably more TV coverage than any other course in the UK and the finishing holes are familiar to just about everyone. Except there have been some alterations – not least to the 18th where a new water hazard extending 90 yards down the fairway and alongside a reshaped green, will stiffen the challenge for all competitors.

All 18 greens have been dug up and replaced with USPGA approved 'bent grass' and it will be very interesting to see how the revamped course is viewed by the professionals in the first big event in 2010.

From an average player's point of view, Wentworth West is a big challenge  especially for the short hitter. The undulating fairways, heather, water hazards and sheer length, make for a difficult but extremely enjoyable test. There are some classic examples; the 3rd hole measuring over 450 yards uphill to a tiered green and the forbidding 17th with the out of bounds posts guarding anything left on this dog leg Par 5.

Every hole is different and has character. It is very expensive, but somehow you feel you need to play here, if only to say you have.
