Situated on the north edge of the South Downs this undulating heathland course has the occasional links feel to it, although it is some way from the English Channel.
Even though its only 6300 from the back tees, you never get the impression that this course is short. It is however traditional and very attractive, with the heather and sand providing the main definition. Some of the colours, especially in autumn, are nothing short of stunning and indeed, the whole course has a reputation for being in superb condition.
There is tremendous variety here, each hole noticeably different than the previous one. The greens are relatively flat, but we did find some borrows which didn’t appear to be there when we surveyed our putts.
The opening par 5 is probably the easiest on the course, but everything is much harder after that and all of the par 3’s are simply excellent. Please note that, to ensure that full rounds are completed in little more than three hours, the convention at West Sussex is to play either single match play games, Stablefords in pairs, or 2-ball foursomes.
